Kefir - Feed Your Microbiome and Heal Your Body
I recently was on a webinar listening to a microbiologist named Peg Coleman. She is a super smart lady with lots of degrees who is passionate about understanding all things related to our microbiome. She raised a really interesting question, which was, “Should we have a Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for microbiome (commonly referred to as probiotics)?”
Think about it with me for a second, we have an RDA for vitamins and minerals and yet the bacteria that live on and within us out number our cells ten to one... wow. We are more bacteria than we are us! Shouldn’t we be replenishing and supporting them every day?
Traditionally, before the days of refrigeration, people were consuming a hardy amount of these microbiome on a daily basis, now however our diet is sorely deficient of these friends without whom we cannot live.
It is so hard for my modern brain to wrap around the fact that bacteria and other invisibles are friends not foe. We were taught to sanitize, disinfect and antibiotic our way to health yet there is so much more going on than meets the eye.
Personally, I don’t need an RDA on the back of a carton to tell me how many probiotics to get...Can I get an Amen? However, I do want to be getting lots every day!
One great way to do this is just to drink raw milk. Fresh milk is teaming with beneficial microbiome to help your gut and you thrive.
Fascinating fact, human breast milk, that perfect first food for babies, has more than 700 different types of microbiome in it.
Just take a second to ponder that! If the body, when making the perfect first food to grow babies on, includes that diverse number of microbiome, then they must be sooooo very important.
If you really want to take your microbiome intake and over all health to the next level, though, raw milk kefir is where it is at. It stands above other cultured foods like sauerkraut and yogurt because it actually can repopulate and live on your gut walls....kefir’s microbiome aren’t isn’t just passing through, they’re making changes and setting up colonies!
So without further ado, here is a video showing you how you too can make this amazing superfood. It’s not that difficult, I promise:)
