Good Morning Superfood Drink
I have a confession to make…I am a farmer who milks cows early in the morning, but I am not always eager to get out of bed to get after things. Especially on those nights when sweet little people have been up a lot…I’m sure you know what I mean.
One of my secrets to doing so (other than the six bossy cows mooing in the yard to be milked) is making a hot superfood drink when I first get up. I’ve always worried though, am I ruining the goodness of my raw milk and cream when I add it to my coffee or tea?
Well, I am happy to say that I am worried no more. I just finished a course on raw milk production and learned that raw milk can be heated to just under 140 degrees before it starts to lose its vitamins, enzymes and beneficial bacteria.
Interestingly 140 degrees is where they start pasteurizing milk so even low temp pasteurized milk has lost much of its goodness :( So as long as you keep your drink below 140, your raw milk’s goodness is safe.
Be sure to try out this recipe for my early morning superfood drink. Spoiler alert, it has raw egg yolks in it, but I promise you won’t taste them. It is just creamy deliciousness! The reason I put the egg yolks in it is that egg yolks from pastured hens fed organically and soy-free are so good for you! They are rich in vitamins A and D, as well as, fatty acids EPA and DHA which help balance your hormones and are good for your nervous system too.
Yay for balanced hormones and a strong nervous system! As a mom, those are two things I can always use more of lol.
Good Morning World Superfood Drink
1/2 Cup of your favorite coffee, oolong tea or herbal coffee replacement (I love Teeccino)
1/4 Cup Raw Milk (I don’t shake the jar so I get the creamiest portion right off the top for this drink)
2 Pastured Egg Yolks from a trusted source
1 Scoop Collagen Protein Powder
1 tsp Maca Powder (optional, but gives an extra superfood punch)
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until the egg yolks are fully incorporated. Put in a small sauce pan and heat slowly while stirring over medium heat until it reaches right around 135 degrees. Enjoy!
(Hint: If you don’t have a thermometer, just use your finger. If the living cells in your finger can comfortably stay submerged in your drink, the living properties of your raw milk and egg yolks will also be comfortable and happy.)
